Many studies have been conducted on the effects of breast cancer and mastectomy on sexuality and body image. Although not yet widespread in our country, lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery), which is quite common abroad, is thought to reduce psychological problems in women with breast cancer. Breast preservation has facilitated the acceptance of a woman’s feminine identity and body image. Mastectomy also has significant effects on a woman’s sexual life. However, it is difficult to claim that only prosthesis implantation increases a woman’s sexual desire, feelings of attractiveness, and sexual satisfaction. This procedure increases the sense of wholeness. A woman’s pre-illness mental adjustment, satisfaction from relationships, pre-illness sexual life characteristics, and post-operative sexual adjustment and satisfaction are far more influential than the extent of breast removal. Studies have shown that women who have undergone breast surgery experience decreased interest in sex, avoidance of breast touching, and changes in sexual habits related to their breasts, such as having intercourse in the dark.
