Breast Tissue
Breast Health / Breast Tissue
Normal Changes in Breast Tissue:
- Changes during adolescence (explained above).
- Changes during the menstrual cycle (changes seen during each menstrual cycle from menarche to menopause). The day menstrual bleeding begins is called the first day of the period. On the 8th day of the menstrual cycle, the breasts are at their smallest size. After the eighth day, the breasts begin to grow gradually.
- Fluid accumulates, causing edema/swelling. New blood vessels, new milk glands, and new milk ducts form. Connective tissue increases.

A few days before menstruation (7 to 10 days before the expected period), breast tissue increases by 50% compared to the 8th day of menstruation. The breasts become tender, and may feel sore or painful to the touch.

3. Changes during menopause.
